Street Food and Chai Without Breaking Keto

Eating out on a budget is doable. At the kibanda, ask for extra greens or kachumbari instead of ugali or rice, and choose the beef, chicken or fish stew. Boiled eggs from the mama mboga or roadside vendor are one of the cheapest keto snacks around. Smokies and boiled eggs are fine, but skip the bhajia, chips, mandazi, samosa and roasted maize, which are all starch or fried in cheap oil. For chai, the milk and tea are okay, but the sugar is the problem, so slowly cut it down or drop it. Many people take chai with a small handful of groundnuts instead of a mandazi. Water is still your best and cheapest drink. Avoid sodas and packaged juices completely, as they are pure sugar. With a few smart swaps, you can keep your usual routine and your M-Pesa budget while staying on track.

Takeaway. Choose eggs, meat and greens at the kibanda, and drink your chai without sugar.
