Cloves (Karafuu)

Cloves
In the kitchen

Dried flower buds sold whole or ground in most Kenyan dukas and spice stalls; a few whole cloves flavour pilau, biryani, mchuzi, and are simmered into chai masala. On keto, use them for warm aroma in rice-free stews, roast meat rubs, and spiced tea without adding sugar.

Traditionally used for

Traditionally used to ease toothache and mouth or gum pain (chewing a whole clove or dabbing clove oil), and commonly taken in warm infusions to settle indigestion, bloating, and coughs.

On keto

Culinary amounts are essentially carb-free and highly aromatic, so a pinch adds big flavour to fatty dishes for negligible net carbs.

Good to know. Cloves are high in eugenol, which can slow blood clotting: use caution with blood thinners (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel) or before surgery. May lower blood sugar, so monitor if on diabetes medication. Concentrated clove oil is potent and can be toxic if swallowed in quantity, especially by children, and can irritate gums or reflux. Medicinal/high doses are not advised in pregnancy; ordinary use as a cooking spice is generally fine. Avoid if allergic.
